The Voice in Your Head
Is Not Your Enemy.
That Is the Problem.

Somewhere you picked up the standard model. There is a voice in your head, the one that says do not ask for that, they will think less of you, this will go the way it always goes. And that voice is a critic. A saboteur. Something inside you working against you. The prescription follows: fight it, override it, drown it out with better self-talk.
The model is wrong, and the prescription fails because of it.
Here is a more accurate identification. That voice is the protection talking. A long time ago something happened that hurt, and your mind built strategies to keep it from happening again. The voice is those strategies, saying out loud what they normally do silently: keeping you away from a place that once cost you something.
So it is not a stranger and it is not an enemy. It is closer to a bodyguard. Loyal, tireless, very senior, and working from a threat assessment last updated when you were seven. It says do not ask because asking once went badly, somewhere you can barely remember. It says they will laugh because someone did. It is not trying to ruin your life. It is trying to save it, with intelligence that expired before you started your first company.
Which is why fighting it fails. You are attacking your own security detail, and it reads the attack as further evidence of danger. And why ignoring it fails. It simply stops using words and speaks through your body instead.
What works is neither. It is identification. The voice keeps talking, because that is its nature and it does not retire. What changes is that you finally know who is speaking, what they are guarding, and how old their information is.
You do not argue with a bodyguard. You thank him, and you walk through the door he is standing in front of, because you know what year it is and he does not.
